Antique Charles II Period Oak Joined Refectory Serving Hall Console Table, c.1680
Antique Charles II Period Oak Joined Refectory Serving Hall Console Table, c.1680
An exceptional and highly characterful English oak joined table dating to the late 17th century, firmly within the Charles II period, circa 1680. This substantial refectory or serving table displays all the hallmarks of early English craftsmanship, with robust construction, bold proportions and richly carved decorative detail.
The table is constructed from solid oak throughout, featuring a two-plank top with a deep, time-softened surface that bears the honest patina and wear expected of a piece over three centuries old. The frieze is adorned with crisp geometric and foliate carving, running continuously along the apron and echoing the decorative language of the period. The corner blocks are boldly carved with stylised leaf motifs, while the turned legs are united by substantial stretchers, giving excellent structural integrity.
Its long, narrow form makes it particularly versatile: ideal as a refectory table in a traditional setting, a serving table in a hall or dining room, or as a dramatic console table in a large country house interior. The scale is practical yet imposing, allowing it to anchor a space without overwhelming it.
Structurally sound and solid throughout. Original joined construction with later historic strengthening consistent with age. Surface wear, marks and patination commensurate with over 300 years of use. No signs of active woodworm.
