Antique Georgian Country Oak Dresser / Housekeeper Cupboard with Plate Rack, c.177
Antique Georgian Country Oak Dresser / Housekeeper Cupboard with Plate Rack, c.1770
A fine and honest Georgian country oak dresser housekeeper cupboard, dating to circa 1770 and retaining superb original colour, patina and form. Constructed in solid oak throughout, this handsome piece combines a practical lower cupboard base with a traditional open plate rack above, offering both generous storage and strong visual presence.
The base features three drawers arranged over a pair of fielded panel cupboard doors, all retaining period brass swan-neck handles, escutcheons and turned wooden knobs. The drawers are generously sized for cutlery, linens or household storage, while the cupboard below provides excellent enclosed space. The dresser stands on shaped bracket feet, adding subtle architectural lift to the overall form.
Above, the open rack is fitted with stepped plate rails and shelves, ideal for displaying pottery, pewter or books. The proportions are well judged, giving the piece a balanced and purposeful appearance typical of late 18th century English country furniture.
The oak has aged beautifully, showing a deep, warm tone with rich surface wear, marks and variations consistent with age and long use, contributing greatly to its authenticity and appeal. This is a versatile and increasingly scarce form, equally suited to a kitchen, dining room, hall or country house interior.
A strong, characterful example of Georgian vernacular oak furniture, combining utility, scale and timeless craftsmanship.
