Antique Georgian Large Gilt Framed Overmantle / Floor Standing Mirror, c.1800
This magnificent large-scale Georgian giltwood mirror dates to around 1800 and is an original example of English late 18th-century decorative craftsmanship. Designed originally as an overmantle, it now works equally well as a dramatic floor-standing mirror, making a powerful architectural statement in any interior.
The frame is richly carved with a bold, arched crest, flowing scrollwork, and classical detailing. The deeply moulded surround features rope-twist borders, beaded inner slips, and beautifully modelled foliate ornament — all hand-carved and retaining a remarkable degree of original surface. The gilding has mellowed to a soft, burnished tone, with areas of wear and patina that give the piece immense depth and authenticity.
This is a mirror of true presence — wide, tall, and visually commanding. The arched top creates a sense of height and elegance, while the heavy proportions anchor it firmly within a room. It is ideal for use above a grand fireplace, in a large hall, or as a freestanding statement piece leaning against a wall in a contemporary setting.
The original glass plate shows light foxing, rippling, and minor imperfections consistent with genuine age, adding to its historic charm rather than detracting from it. The scale allows it to flood a room with light, reflect architectural features, and dramatically expand the sense of space.
Large Georgian mirrors of this size and quality are increasingly scarce, particularly with original gilt surfaces intact. This example would suit grand country houses, boutique hotels, retail interiors, or modern homes seeking a bold, classical focal point.
