Victorian Wooden & Cast Iron Coffin Cart

Victorian Wooden & Cast Iron Coffin Cart

A rare and historically interesting Victorian coffin cart (also known as a bier), constructed with a wooden frame mounted on a cast metal wheeled base. Pieces like this were traditionally used to transport coffins during funeral processions before motorised hearses became common.

The cart features a solid timber upper frame with roller bars designed to allow a coffin to be moved smoothly along the platform. Beneath sits an intricate cast metal chassis with large spoked wheels and period mechanical detailing.

A particularly poignant feature is the original brass memorial plaque mounted to the front which reads:

“Dedicated to the dear memory of Mary Elizabeth Davies of Dudleston Hall. Born March 27th 1836. Died Feby 28th 1917.”

This inscription connects the piece to a specific historical individual and location, adding to its character and collectability.

The cart retains its original wheels, though the historic worm rubber tyres are now perishing due to age. The structure itself remains sturdy and displays beautifully.

An exceptional piece of Victorian funerary history that would make a striking display item for collectors, museums, theatrical props, historic houses, or unusual interior décor.
