Antique French Chestnut Country Provincial Console Hall Dining Kitchen Table, c.1790

Antique French Chestnut Country Provincial Console Hall Dining Kitchen Table, c.1790

A wonderfully honest late 18th century French country provincial console table, crafted in solid chestnut and dating to circa 1790. Rich in rustic authenticity, this piece embodies the restrained practicality of rural French farmhouse furniture, where strength, simplicity and longevity were paramount.

The rectangular plank top displays beautiful time-softened surface wear, with visible grain variation, historic tool marks and gentle undulation acquired over more than two centuries. The deep, warm tones of aged chestnut create a mellow patina impossible to replicate in modern reproductions.

Beneath the top sits a single frieze drawer, fitted with its original iron ring pull and escutcheon, adding subtle decorative detail while remaining entirely functional. The table stands on square tapering legs united by stretchers on all sides, providing structural stability and classic provincial form.

With a length of 1299mm, it is exceptionally versatile — ideal as a hall console, kitchen preparation table, small farmhouse dining table or country house side table. The apron height of 566mm allows comfortable seating when used as a dining table.

An elegant yet robust 18th century French provincial survivor — understated, tactile and deeply characterful.
