Antique Georgian Country Oak Lowboy Desk Console Hall Study Table, c.1780

Antique Georgian Country Oak Lowboy Desk Console Hall Study Table, c.1780

A charming and well-proportioned Georgian country oak lowboy, dating to the late 18th century and retaining a wonderfully honest surface throughout. This versatile piece works equally well as a small writing desk, console table, hall table or bedroom dressing table, making it a highly adaptable example of Georgian furniture.

The rectangular oak top displays excellent colour and grain, with the mellow wear, small marks and gentle undulations expected from over two centuries of use. Below, the table is fitted with three drawers arranged in the classic lowboy configuration: a central drawer flanked by two smaller drawers, all retaining their original pierced brass swan-neck handles and backplates. The drawer fronts show pleasing variation in tone, further adding to the piece’s authenticity and character.

The shaped apron features a simple yet elegant central cut-out, typical of provincial Georgian craftsmanship, and the table stands on straight, square tapering legs, giving it a restrained and practical country feel rather than formal court furniture. The proportions are compact without feeling mean, ideal for modern homes where genuine Georgian furniture is desired but space is at a premium.

Solid, original and full of quiet presence, this is a highly usable Georgian lowboy that sits comfortably in both traditional interiors and layered contemporary spaces.
