Bespoke Chinoiserie Oak Secretary Desk | Hand-Painted Midnight Navy & Gold Gilded Bureau | 1920s Jacobean Revival Writing Desk with Pheasant & Peony Art
A Masterpiece of Heritage & Botanical Art
This exquisite early 20th-century (circa 1920s) Jacobean Revival secretary desk has been meticulously reimagined as a one-of-a-kind statement piece. Originally finished in a heavy, dark stain, the bureau has been professionally stripped and artistically refinished to celebrate both its historic craftsmanship and a bold, contemporary Chinoiserie aesthetic.
The Exterior: Drama & Detail
The main body is finished in a sophisticated Midnight Navy matte, providing a deep, velvety backdrop for the intricate botanical transfers. These hand-applied designs feature vibrant peonies and regal pheasants, woven through with hand-gilded gold leaf detailing that follows the desk’s architectural lines.
The iconic bulbous "cup-and-cover" legs, a hallmark of high-quality Jacobean Revival furniture, have been highlighted in gold to emphasise their grand silhouette.
The Reveal: Natural Tiger Oak
The fall-front lid and drawer faces have been left in their natural state, finished in a protective satin varnish to showcase the rare "book-matched" tiger oak grain. Upon opening the desk, you are greeted by a continuation of the floral motif across the writing slope, framed by a striking terracotta-rose border that adds warmth and an unexpected pop of designer colour.
Storage: The interior retains its original pigeonhole compartments and a charming central miniature drawer with its original knob.
Authenticity: I have preserved the original leather writing surface, which bears the gentle, authentic patina of its century-long history.
Hardware: The original brass teardrop handles have been polished to a bright gold to complement the new gilded accents.
Security: The lock is fully functional and supplied with a replacement skeleton key finished with a decorative emerald tassel.
